Radiological measurements and traceability of materials are becoming more and more important in the industrial sector of stones and building materials for both producers and users. This is due to the recent European regulatory restrictions on the maximum level of radiological emissions for materials intended for use in public and private building structures. The proposed system, called CORSAIR (Cloud Oriented Radiation Sensor for Advanced Investigation of Rocks) is a cyber-physical system empowered by cloud-based technologies that consists of sensing nodes, data collection gateways and a centralized cloud application. These components are interconnected in a star-of-stars topology, exploiting respectively LoRaWAN, Internet network, and provide specialized user interface. The system includes also handheld devices with dedicated user interface to control the sensing nodes on the field via WiFi Direct connection. The system introduces a fast, repeatable, real-time and nondestructive method to measure radiological emissions and other parameters of each single building material item, uniquely identified by an applied RFID tags. Moreover, it makes those data available to all stakeholders, enabling to trace the materials along the full market chain, from extraction to the final customer, with modern technologies.
